George Strait
George Strait (* 18. Mai 1952 in Poteet, Texas) ist ein US-amerikanischer Country-Sänger. Das erste Lied, mit dem der inzwischen 29jährige Strait als Country-Musiker Erfolg hatte, war die Dean-Dillon-Komposition „Unwound“. Die Single schaffte es in die Country-Top-Ten. Die nächsten Singles erreichten ebenfalls vordere Plätze in den Country-Charts. 1982 hatte er mit „Fool Hearted Memory“ seinen ersten Nummer-1-Hit. Es folgte eine nahezu ununterbrochene Folge von Top-Hits.
Als George Strait 1981 seine berufliche Laufbahn begann, war die aktuelle Country-Musik stark einem breiten Massenpublikum angepasst, wodurch der charakteristische Countrysound nach und nach verschwand und die Unterschiede zur Popmusik zusehend verwischten. George Strait gehörte zu einer kleinen Gruppe von Interpreten die in den 1980er Jahren begannen, sich auf Ursprünge und Traditionen der Country-Musik zu besinnen und somit als die Wegbereiter für eine neue Generation von Country-Musikern, wie Garth Brooks, Clint Black oder Dwight Yoakam gelten. Strait war der dominierende Country-Sänger der achtziger und neunziger Jahre.
Er veröffentlichte mehr als 34 Alben und über 100 Singles. 21 seiner Alben und 41 seiner Singles erreichten Platz 1 der Billboard Charts. In den 1990ern war er der meistgespielte Künstler in den USA noch vor Garth Brooks, Michael Jackson oder Mariah Carey.
